The old van when first bought (50,000 miles) returned 31mpg on a mixture of long distance/ town UK/France driving, this was a mixture of half to full load.

I guess the problem is it's so gutless that you have to 'give it some welly' just to avoid frustrating other drivers and that makes it drink fuel.
