In contrast, most countries across Africa have been responsible for less than 0.01% of all emissions over the last 266 years. Asia is by far the largest emitter, accounting for 53% of global emissions. As it is home to 60% of the world’s population this means that per capita emissions in Asia are slightly lower than the world average, however. China is, by a significant margin, Asia’s and the world’s largest emitter: it emits nearly 10 billion tonnes each year
This is because the emissions growth recorded in China and India suggests that citizens of these countries are now the biggest contributors to climate change. In reality, however, even after the dramatic growth recorded over the past three decades, per capita emissions remain higher in both Europe (7.3 MtCO2) and the US (16.1 MtCO2) than China
